Spinal decompression alleviates immobilizing neck pain.

After two weeks of treatment on the decompression table, Hugh’s pain was gone.

Firefighting is in Hugh Brown’s blood. Hugh didn’t know that when he first became a firefighter 26 years ago. It was only after he began an online search for his ancestors that he made the discovery, which brought some context to is career.

“When I first became a firefighter, I had never stepped foot into a firehouse or onto a fire engine before,” Hugh reveals. “In fact, the only reason I applied for the job was because a colleague told me they were hiring. I figured, Why not? I was working for a private ambulance service, running non-emergency calls at the time. Before that, I decided to go to EMT school, and after that I spent a year working on my own as an EMT.

“Then, awhile back, I did this ancestry search and found out that there were three retired fire chiefs in my gene pool. That’s in addition to my maternal grandfather, who was a firefighter in Philadelphia around 1900.

“After I learned all that, it started to make sense to me why I was drawn to this. And, I have to say, it’s been a great job. I’ve really enjoyed it. The schedule has allowed me to watch my kids grow up and attend their school functions, and it’s very rewarding.”

Hugh’s rewards include rising to the rank of battalion chief for the Glynn County Fire Department in Brunswick, Georgia, where he spends a good deal of his free time keeping honeybees. An almost insatiable taste for honey is at the root of his hobby.

“I like honey, and it’s expensive,” he explains. “But what I get out of my beehives is so much more flavorful than what you can buy in the store. Besides that, bees are fun to watch. They’re interesting creatures, and they’re necessary.”

Help from a chiropractic doctor recently became necessary for Hugh after aggravating neck pain made it hard for him to not only fight fires and keep bees, but also sleep soundly and drive a car.

An MRI revealed the source of Hugh’s pain was a pair of bulging discs and degenerating bone in his cervical spine. Those issues put pressure on a nerve that left Hugh quite irritable.

“The left side of my neck, my left shoulder and my left arm were all very painful, and I’m not proud to say it, but I wasn’t very nice at home or to my co-workers at that time,” Hugh confesses. “My wife was the first one to point that out to me. She said I was almost like a different person.

“It was because my neck, shoulder and arm were hurting so bad that I had to hold my arm up. At that time, I could not raise my arm up over my head. I couldn’t turn my head, so if I was driving and needed to change lanes, I had to turn my whole body to look.”

That’s obviously quite dangerous, so Hugh decided to seek treatment. First, a chiropractor said there was nothing he could do and suggested surgery might be the only option. That news didn’t sit well with Hugh.

“I thought to myself, I don’t want to do surgery. That’s not an option,” Hugh remembers. “Then my niece’s husband said to me one day that my problem was just like one he had, and he told me how spinal decompression completely fixed the problem.”

Time to Decompress

Spinal decompression is a drug-free, noninvasive, nonsurgical therapy that can be used to treat bulging, herniated or protruding discs, spinal stenosis, degenerative disc disease, neuropathy in the arms or legs, and post-surgical neck and/or back pain.

Hugh learned that his niece’s husband received the treatment from a doctor who utilized the DRX9000™ decompression system. Hugh’s search for such a doctor led him to DeLand Chiropractic & Spinal Decompression.

During his first visit, Hugh met with Jeremy M. Gordon, DC. Through an examination and review of Hugh’s x-rays, MRI and CT scan, Dr. Gordon confirmed the orthopedist’s findings but also delivered some good news.

He said,“I can’t make you perfect, but I can help you and get rid of all this pain you’re suffering with,” Hugh recalls. “That was back in late April, early May. And I can tell you that May 7 was the last day that I worked at the fire department in all that pain.”

As it was with his niece’s husband, Hugh’s flight from pain was made possible through the use of the DRX9000 decompression system, which “is unequaled in its design and clinical results,” according to Dr. Gordon.

“If you want the best results for your patients, you need to have the best equipment,” Dr. Gordon reasons. “That’s why we utilize the DRX9000. It’s a great way to treat a patient from a conservative standpoint.

“That is always part of my goal. First and foremost, with every patient, I strive to avoid a surgical intervention, if at all possible, and noninvasive forms of treatment such as spinal decompression help us achieve that goal with minimal risk.”

A typical treatment using the DRX9000 begins with the patient getting comfortable on the decompression table. The DRX9000 then creates a very mild decompressive force on the patient’s damaged discs.

This decompressive force reduces the pressure on the discs, which helps to pull some of the bulging disc material back inward. The return of that disc material to its natural state alleviates the pain and rehydrates the injured disc.

The DRX9000 can be used to treat cervical and/or lumbar disc injuries through a program that typically includes 24 visits across 10 weeks. Each visit lasts about an hour, with the first 10 designed to determine the patient’s likely response.

“Even before I finished my treatment I could look up, look around and make full use of my arm without any issues.” – Hugh

“We start by treating patients five days a week for two weeks, and our goal is to see a 50 percent improvement in function and pain in those first 10 visits,” Dr. Gordon educates. “If we see that improvement, we continue with the remaining 14 treatments.”

That standard course of treatment has proven very effective. DeLand Chiropractic & Spinal Decompression has tracked the results of patients receiving its spinal decompression therapy for over 12 years.

“After tracking hundreds of patients, I am very proud to report that our patient satisfaction rate exceeds 80 percent,” Dr. Gordon proclaims. “That’s a much higher satisfaction rate than invasive surgery.”

Decompression is typically followed by pulsed electromagnetic field therapy and/or electrical muscle stimulation to restore proper muscle tone, decrease inflammation and maximize the effects of the treatment. It’s an all-inclusive therapy that worked wonders for Hugh.

Miraculous Results

The trip from his Georgia home to DeLand Chiropractic & Spinal Decompression takes about 2½ hours, so Hugh and his wife stayed at a friend’s condo near DeLand for the first installment of treatments.

“I was on that decompression table every day, Monday through Friday, for two weeks, and at the end of those two weeks my nerve pain was gone,” Hugh enthuses. “I was finally getting a good night’s sleep again, and my neck, shoulder and arm were all feeling better.”

Hugh completed the second phase in July. He and his wife drove to DeLand and back on the same day for those treatments. Hugh says the payoff made the long drive worthwhile.

“Even before I finished my treatment I could look up, look around and make full use of my arm without any issues,” Hugh raves. “Since then, I’ve started a physical therapy program that I do from home to build up strength in my neck muscles.

“I need to stick with that to make sure I don’t fall back into that painful state again, and I’m confident I won’t. Spinal decompression helped me immensely, and I can’t say enough good things about Dr. Gordon and his staff.

“Everybody that works at DeLand Chiropractic & Spinal Decompression is so personable, so friendly, and they bend over backward to help you. Every one of them, they’re all so nice. What they did for me was nothing short of miraculous.”
